GBA will be uttering these phrases to four of our leaders in the span of a year. The company has already said good-bye to two leaders who retired in May of 2015. Coming in December will be a third retirement and the fourth in April 2016. With each of these retirements, new opportunities are created. Although we are saying good-bye to several leaders that have been with the company for many years and have been instrumental in building the company we are today, we are excited for those stepping into new roles.

On May 21, Dave Lewis retired after serving 15 years with GBA as the head of the Fire Protection and Life Safety Group. Dave was a huge asset to the team and will be missed, especially with his laid back demeanor and ever present smile. He brought a deep knowledge in this field and shared it freely with his group and our clients, providing a terrific asset to our firm.

Bryan Rasmussen will step up to fill Dave’s shoes. . The group provides design and commissioning services for fire alarm, detection, and suppression systems and fire and life safety code consulting. The group conducts code evaluations and building assessments, plan review and inspections related to fire protection and life safety. Bryan will take over Dave’s lead role for managing the Federal Bureau of Prisons, FBOP master services agreement, and State of Missouri building services contracts.

Second, Bill Carter, firm principal and head of the Water Environment Group, retired on May 28. Bill had been with the company for 26 of his 39 years in the engineering profession. Much of his career was focused on wastewater systems for municipalities and sewer districts. Work will not be the same without his hearty laugh and quick wit.

Bill Carter quoteThe Water Environment Group was led by three principals and with Bill’s retirement, the remaining two will split Bill’s duties amongst them. Gary Beck will oversee the water/wastewater projects, while Dennis Cantrell will oversee the stormwater group and the O’Fallon water environment group. They will also have help from Associates, Les Barnt and Tim Schneller to oversee daily tasks.

Next, we will be saying good luck to Paul Bertrand. He is not officially retiring until December, but he has already handed over the reins. Paul has been with GBA for 28 of his 44 year career. He was the leader of the traffic group and oversaw hundreds of traffic-related projects that made the roads safer for the traveling public. While he is still roaming the halls of GBA for the next few months, we will soak up his knowledge.

As of April 2, Mandy Anderson is heading up the traffic group. In addition to being the Traffic Group Leader, she is also the lead for traffic modeling. Dave Mennenga is now the group’s technical lead for studies, including traffic impact studies and access justification reports (AJRs). Mark Stuempel and Janelle Clayton will share design leadership responsibilities. Mark’s and Janelle’s duties include noise studies, signal design, traffic control design, lighting design and permanent signing design.

2016 will bring another retirement and a transition in our top leadership. Michael Smith announced recently he will be retiring in April 2016. He has been President/CEO since 2001 and as of July 1, 2015 his role is CEO/Chairman of the Board. Tim Ross was voted by the Board as the new President and Dan Abitz as our Executive Vice President. The three will work together over the next several months to make sure the transition is smooth.

Mike has been with GBA since 1972 which includes 43 of the company’s 46 years. He has seen the company go through a lot of changes and has been instrumental in helping the firm grow over those years. His has been a leading advocate of developing GBA’s learning culture, leadership development and overall firm initiatives. Smith summed up his thoughts for the future of the company by saying, “The leadership of GBA across the board is in great hands going forward. I have the utmost confidence GBA’s future is very bright.”
