GBA’s ‘Emerging Green Builders’ Take First in Local Competition - USGBC Competition Focuses on Eco-Friendly Emergency Housing Units
Lenexa, Kan. (October 6, 2009) – With that as their goal, GBA architects and engineers Suzanne Berkey, Molly Mulloy, Doug Norman, Amanda Schowengerdt, and Megan Walter, all LEED APs and members of the firm’s FocusGreen team, set out to design a prototypical emergency housing unit (EHU) with an ISO Standard 8 feet wide by 40 feet long by 9.5 feet high. According to the competition challenge, the EHUs were “to be designed to be self contained housing that can be loaded and shipped throughout the US or internationally at a moment’s notice.”
GBA’s Green Team met the challenge and more, with a first place prize and an opportunity to represent the Kansas City Chapter of the USGBC at the USGBC’s annual Green Building Conference and Expo in Phoenix in November. Sustainability, innovation, and social consciousness, all components of the LEED Green Building Rating System, were incorporated into the design, helping to make GBA’s Eco EHU a winning sanctuary after the storm.
GBA was founded in Kansas City, Mo., in 1969 and today has more than 200 employees headquartered in five offices in Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois. The firm serves eight primary markets including building design, transportation, water environment, land planning, civil/site development, municipal engineering, roof consulting, and surveying.
